About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Role Overview

The Public Engagement Assistant will be part of the Public Engagement (PE) Team in the Division of Fish, Wildlife, & Nature Preserves. In this role you will positively impact wildlife and habitat conservation by working on projects that tell the stories of our work, help customers navigate our new license system, and generate revenue.

This immersive internship on a team of 7 colleagues is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable professional experience, flex your creativity skillset, visit several of Indiana’s beautiful natural places across the state, and interact with staff and our customers.

Projects may include:

  • Coordinating an art and photo contest
  • Creating training materials to help customers navigate our new license system, the Activity Hub.
  • Creating graphics for a toolkit to help Indiana residents understand how we are funded
  • Visiting agency properties to take photos and videos
  • Creating and curating content for our website, social media, electronic newsletters, news releases, events, and other communication channels.
  • Other duties as the need arises

We are seeking someone who is:

  • Interested in hunting and fishing, environmental science, science education, marketing, mass communications, environmental or outdoor education, or other natural resources-related fields (biology, botany, fish and wildlife, ecology, etc.).
  • Proficient with electronic communication, including taking photos and video, and creating graphics.
  • Can work independently and is interested in building skills as a project manager.

 

Hourly Rate:

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations 
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline 
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels 
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
